And then Close Encounters - a lot of really great films that we resemble in the show. I’m not a big crier, but that just always makes me cry. And yeah, I watched E.T., which I absolutely love. I was like, I’ve got to watch some more of these. Me and my brother watched it and I just love it. And I was obsessed as soon as I watched Stand by Me. It’s crazy because, you know, my parents always want me to watch old films to make me realize how amazing some of the older actors are. Oh yeah, I’ve seen all of those movies actually. How much of that stuff had you been exposed prior to doing this project? Had you seen E.T. I’m sure you know that a lot of what’s in Stranger Things was influenced by films and books from the early 1980s. During a recent telephone conversation, she spoke in her thick British accent, one that disappears completely in Stranger Things, about her obsession with Winona Ryder, her complicated feelings about scary movies, and why she wishes she could have lived in the 1980s, the decade in which Stranger Things was set. In real life, though, Brown - whose resume includes a role in the BBC series Intruders and guest appearances on Modern Family and Grey’s Anatomy - is extremely talkative and gregarious. As the mysterious, telekinetically powerful Eleven, she’s able to fling bodies across a room in one scene and quietly convey a sense of deep sadness in another, a notable feat considering her character rarely speaks. That mixture of all of us working, collaborating together - it was so weird, so different.Millie Bobby Brown is only 12 years old, but in the Netflix series Stranger Things, she delivers a performance that many adult actors would have a hard time matching. And, you know, Martie’s performance was amazing. “I mean, it always shocks me what we can do in our show,” said Brown. When she saw the final version, she was shocked to see just how good it was, and how great her double’s performance was. We got this incredible small child to play me, Martie Blair.” Once we talked through it, it only made sense to have me play my younger self, and every time she sees her reflection, or recalls a memory, it’s her younger self. ![]() “I had to really sit down with the Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy to understand what specifically was happening, who was playing what and how that was going to work out. “That process was very unique for me,” Brown said. Speaking to Variety, Brown talked about the “very unique” experience of getting to explore the younger version of her character, and noted that she had to really dive into what was happening for her to make sense of it. Millie Bobby Brown has been starring in Netflix’s Stranger Things for almost a full decade now, and in the most recent season, the actress got to return to her younger self via various flashbacks that showed off more of Eleven’s childhood. ![]()
